Detailed Description

Developed by the Water Footprint Network, WaterStat is the world’s most comprehensive water footprint database. WaterStat ensures that scientifically rigorous water footprint statistics are available for everyone to use.

The Water Footprint Network is a dynamic, international learning community and a platform for connecting diverse communities interested in sustainability, equitability, and efficiency of water use. Water Footprint Network’s data, methods, and tools available for free. Water Footprint Network develops these resources using diverse perspectives from a broad range of stakeholders from different social, cultural, economic and environmental backgrounds.

Water footprint statistics have many uses – in Water Footprint Assessment studies, awareness raising and research projects, to inform public policies or company business strategies. Because the water footprint statistics have been formulated using the same methodology – the Global Water Footprint Standard – they are comparable and can be used to tell the complex story of water. This is critically important and valuable to advancing the application of Water Footprint Assessment.

To ensure that scientifically rigorous water footprint statistics are available for everyone to use, the Water Footprint Network develops and maintains WaterStat, the world’s most comprehensive water footprint database.

WaterStat currently includes six datasets:

1) Product water footprint statistics

2) Monthly blue water footprint (30×30 grid scale)

3) National water footprint statistics

4) International virtual water flow statistics

5) Water scarcity statistics

6) Water pollution level statistics

All data included in WaterStat comes from peer-reviewed research. Additional water data will be added as they become available.

All datasets are published under Creative Commons BY-SA license. When referring to this database, please cite as follows: Water Footprint Network & University of Twente, the Netherlands. When using specific data refer to the original source as indicated for each separate dataset.
