Online Brine Platform (2019)

The Online Brine Platform is an active web service that aims to promote the flow of secondary raw materials by linking brine owners with mineral/water users and technology providers.

Primary Functions

  • Access an interactive web service that connects brine owners with mineral and water users and technology providers to promote the reuse of secondary raw materials and water.

Detailed Description

The Online Brine Platform (OBP) is an active web service that aims to promote the flow of secondary raw materials by linking brine owners with mineral/water users and technology providers. Providers of waste heat are also of a high importance on the OBP. The service allows new users to register according to their role, and lets users search information and establish links with relevant parties. Hence, a network of interested stakeholders will be created to facilitate the transition towards a Circular Economy within the process industry. In addition, a web portal has been created to access specific information regarding saline waste water management.

Users registered to the platform will be able to access information with respect to available quantities and qualities of saline wastewater, recovered materials and resources needed by end users, and the location and proximity of industrial sites. Thus, industries will be able to make informed decisions regarding the management of their own resources. The OBP reduces the transaction costs (e.g. search and information costs) by proposing possible matches to registered users.

The OBP is an innovative prototype platform in the domain of saline wastewater management aiming to promote resource efficiency and circular economy. The OBP is developed by National Technical University of Athens in the framework of the ZERO BRINE project. The OBP aims to play a key role in replicating the paradigms generated in the framework of the ZERO BRINE project.

In the OBP, the brine streams generated by process industries as well as the raw materials (minerals) and the water streams used by these industries will be mapped together with available technologies and waste heat streams. Possible interactions between the industries across the value chain will be identified.

In addition to the OBP, a web portal provides access specific information in the domain of saline waste water management. A collaboration tool (forum) is embedded to the portal in order to facilitate communication between key stakeholders.
